Creating a slideshow for micmusic.co.za
A Quick HowTo
Firstly, you need to be running Drupal 6, as the Views Showcase module is only available for version 6.x. Then you need to install the Content Construction Kit, FileField, ImageField, Views and Views Showcase modules. You'll also need to select or create a region in your theme for the slideshow to go into.
Once you've got everything installed, you'll need to create a new content type. Go to Admin -> Content -> Content types, and create a new content type. I called mine "slide". This new content needs to have a title, a body, and an image, so make sure you add an additional "file" field of type "image". Also make sure you reorder the fields so that the image is first, the title is second and the body is third. The order of the rest of the fields doesn't matter.
Now that you have a new field type, you'll need to create your view. Go to Admin -> Site Building -> Views and add a new view. I called my view "slideshow." Under the "Filter" section, you'll want to filter the list by node type, selecting your new "slide" content type as the node type to filter by. Then, under the "Fields" section, add the image, title and body fields of the node to the list, making sure you maintain the order of image then title then body.
The last configuration step is to set the "Style" and "Row style" settings under "Basic settings" both to "Views Showcase." When you set these styles you can setup the way the slideshow looks, and the fields it must use. I set my row style to use the title as the title, the image as the thumbnail, and the body as the teaser.
Then, after saving my view, I added a display of type Block (still on the views page), saved the view again, and added that block to my region on the front page (via Admin -> Site building -> Blocks).
After that I used the Firebug extension in Firefox to figure out all the styles associated with the slideshow, and tweaked the CSS until the slideshow looked the way I wanted it to.
